“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” I’ve heard this statement made many times before and I never really felt its real weight until I decided to venture out on my own to experience something new.
I come from Trinidad, officially known as Trinidad and Tobago. On revealing this fact during my various travels I was met with either a response of “Wow! How exotic!” or the more popular, “Where’s that?!! in Africa?” If you’re not familiar with or have never heard of it, Trinidad and Tobago are two majestic islands south of the Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela. We’re known for our pristine beaches, amazing carnival and laidback way of life and while I do adore island living, mainly the fact that the beach is never far away, I made the decision to travel to Barcelona in 2010 to pursue a masters degree in Translation and Intercultural Studies.
I always had a love for languages and studied Spanish and Portuguese during my undergraduate years at the university in Trinidad, but my love for travel quickly developed after arriving in Europe. There was so much to see, do and experience and lots of amazing people to do it all with. For the two years that I spent there, my flatmates and I grew into our own little family and it has been one of the best experiences of my life.
I was able to road trip through Europe to some of the most gorgeous cities in the world, attempt skiing and ice skating for the first time and even attend my very first acting class all the while meeting wonderful people who became my life-long friends.
I hadn’t had enough of Europe just yet and a year later I moved to a quaint, little town in France where I began my adventure of teaching English in three primary schools. I was also able to add French to my list of languages and continue my exploration of all that Europe has to offer.
Since returning to Trinidad my passion for travel has not waned and my hunger to see and learn more continues to grow. I now have my sights set on South America and I hope to be able to share those experiences with you soon.
I do hope that through this blog you are inspired to lose sight of the shore and venture into the unknown to gain some of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. I intend to share what I have learnt which I do hope will offer some assistance to you on your adventures.
